Doug King won’t give up a slice of Coventry City unless he believes a mega-rich investor can ‘add value’.
King has guided the Sky Blues back to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years and must now mastermind their survival.
In order to avoid relegation – which seven of the last nine promoted clubs have failed to do – King must oversee a shrewd summer transfer window to strengthen Frank Lampard’s squad.

King could invite fresh investment to increase the Sky Blues’ spending power and there are always wealthy individuals ready to take a stake in Premier League clubs.

The expectation of newly-promoted clubs nowadays is that they need to spend in excess of £100million in the summer window to stand a chance of survival. Sunderland and Leeds United did and they will play Premier League football again next term.

But King is keen to stick to a model of developing assets to increase squad value which, he believes, gives his club the best chance of long-term growth.
Speaking on the Football Boardroom Podcast, King said: “I’m well acquainted with selling equity at enterprise value companies and at times, if you need to grow, you need to get additional capital into businesses, whether it be debt, whether it be equity.
“Obviously it was very important to get 100 percent very quickly to change direction and we’ve achieved what we’ve achieved to get back into the Premier League.
“The thing about additional capital is squad value, and value of players is very important in every discussion that I look at.
“The reason for that is you can spend £100million but you’re only really spending £100million if you spend it well on players.
“Those players, you are hoping, if you look at value, you will build to be worth more than that at some point to trade them on again.
