Update emerges on Ipswich Town, Derby County battle for £7.2m striker
Ipswich Town and Derby County are both close to matching Charlotte FC’s £7.2m valuation of Patrick Agyemang, as per the Daily Mail.
Ipswich Town and Derby County will be back up against each other in the Championship again next season. ITFC and the Rams have met a hefty 89 times over the years, and the former’s relegation sets up two more ties in the 2025/26 season.
The Tractor Boys will be out to fight for an immediate promotion back to the Premier League while John Eustace’s side intend on pushing away from the relegation battle they were embroiled in last time around.
The Championship duo could go head-to-head on the transfer front first though having both set sights on a deal for Charlotte FC powerhouse Patrick Agyemang.
Rumours have been rife of late and now, the Daily Mail says both Ipswich Town and Derby County are close to matching the £7.2m Agyemang valuation set by Charlotte.
There is no shortage of coompetition for ITFC and the Rams thouogh, with numerous clubs from overseas said to be keen.
This new reporrt names Belgian duo RSC Anderlecht and KRC Genk and Spanish pair Real Oviedo and RCD Espanyol as other sides with sights on a deal for the 24-year-old.
A high potential asset
It is becoming increasingly more common that football clubs look for deals for promising strikers with strong physical profiles in an effort to make gains in a challenging market.
With a move for Agyemang, both Ipswich Town and Derby County are looking to do this.
Agyemang has 22 goals and five assists to his name in 72 games for Charlotte along with five goals in 10 for the United States national side. He is a tall and powerful striker with strong finishing ability – some key traits to be a successful goalsccorer.
However, his wider game needs developing with statistics highlighting limitations in his passing and defensive contributions. Nonetheless, with goalscoring instincts and a fantastic level of physicality, clubs will see him as someone who they can develop and refine into a real force.
The Delap replacement for Ipswich Town?
At £7.2m, Agyemang makes for a pretty pricey signing. And, it would be assumed that he is viewed as the Liam Delap replacement by Ipswich Town.
Even though they already have George Hirst and Ali Al-Hamadi on the books, it is not out of the question that they target another striker even if Agyemang joins ITFC. It could open the door to a potential new loan mvoe for Al-Hamadi, who spent the second half of last season at Stoke City.
Derby County will hope to have something to say about the Agyemang swoop though, with a multi-club battle for his signature on the cards.
