Derby County lauded for signing ex-Premier League player – He “ticks a lot of boxes”

Derby County look set to bring in 29-year-old frontman Carlton Morris this summer, as John Eustace aims to bolster his attacking options ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Morris struggled upon his return to the second tier last season after netting a respectable 11 in the Premier League for Luton Town the previous term. His eight goals for the Hatters last season were 12 fewer than his 2022/23 tally, and weren’t enough to save his club from back-to-back relegations.

But the striker looks set for a return to the Championship next season, as John Percy revealed that a medical will be booked for him to sign for Derby County.

FLW’s Derby County fan pundit, Shaun Woodward, is more than delighted with this signing and feels that Morris fits a role up top that has been left vacant ever since Chris Martin departed the club in 2020.

The Telegraph’s John Percy revealed that a medical will be completed for Carlton Morris once he returns from his holiday. Woodward can’t wait for everything to be signed, as he believes Morris will “thrive at Derby.”

He said, “You get players around Morris with pace, and he’s going to support them and help them score goals, and he’s scored a lot of goals himself in his career.

“He did struggle last season, but in a poor Luton side, so if we get some good players around him, I think he could thrive here.

“We’ve been crying out for a target man since Chris Martin, really […], so I think he’d be a good addition to the squad, someone who could support the wide men, which we have been crying out about for years.”

Carlton Morris has only scored once against Derby County in the four games he’s played against them during his career, but Woodward felt that he was always one of the key players whenever the Rams faced him.

“He’s always been someone you dislike when he’s playing against you, which shows you that he’s good at what he does, and I think when he’s playing on your side, you appreciate him even more,” he continued.

And, at just 29, there’s still plenty of scope to return to a 20-goal striker at Championship level.

Woodward concluded, “He’s still at a good age. He’s big, strong, a good leader and has played in the Premier League as well.

“So he ticks a lot of boxes, and I think he’d be a great bit of business if we can get it over the line.”

Carlton Morris proves true statement of intent by Derby County ahead of next season

Despite a down season for Carlton Morris last term, he’s still got the skillset to be a top signing for Derby this summer.

The Rams will be hoping that they can avoid any relegation danger in the 2025/26 campaign, and you’d feel that under Eustace and the signings he’s making, Derby should be on the up sooner rather than later.

The former Blackburn Rovers boss has also agreed deals with a couple of his former players, with Andreas Wiemann and Danny Batth also set to make a move to Derbyshire this summer.

After Eustace was able to transform Blackburn into a play-off-contending team mere months after narrowly avoiding relegation, it seems like the blueprint is slowly being formed for the 45-year-old to repeat this unlikely success at Pride Park.

A play-off spot may be wishful thinking just yet for many Derby fans, but you get the feeling that the Rams are on their way to establishing themselves as a solid Championship side once again.
