Blue Jays Seemingly Made Bo Bichette Decision Amid Latest Rumors
The Toronto Blue Jays committed $500 million to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the next decade. It was a smart decision, but only if the Blue Jays do what they have to do to add stars in free agency and on the trade market.
Well, according to a recent report, the Blue Jays attempted to do exactly that.
According to Sean McAdam of Mass Live, the Blue Jays attempted to trade for Rafael Devers of the Boston Red Sox before he was dealt to the San Francisco Giants.
What Led up to the Devers Trade?
Plenty happened with the Boston Red Sox over the past few days, but the decision to trade Devers is one of the more surprising decisions in Major League Baseball history. While there were some questions about his future with the Red Sox, due to his offseason comments, trading one of the better players in Major League Baseball was a very questionable decision.
According to Yahoo Sports, Devers didn’t request a trade,
“Devers didn’t demand a trade, according to multiple team sources, but he communicated that he would be OK with one. The team didn’t shop him either, per ESPN’s Buster Olney, but listened to offers. Ultimately, none of that really mattered. The relationship had eroded past the point of repair,” Yahoo wrote.
But for the Toronto Blue Jays, showing interest in the left-handed slugger, what did it mean? Were the Blue Jays looking to improve their roster this season or looking for a long-term answer in the middle of their lineup? With Bo Bichette’s pending free agency, could this have been a telling sign of what’s to come for the multi-time Blue Jays All-Star?
Will Bichette Be the Next Trade Domino To Fall?
While Bichette isn’t the same type of player as Devers, the Toronto Blue Jays have to understand what they have. He’s still a very good player, leading the American League in hits twice throughout his career.
The last thing the Blue Jays want to do is allow a star player to leave when they haven’t been able to attract elite free agents.
More importantly, the Red Sox just showed the Blue Jays how they shouldn’t run an organization. If they want to make players happy and entice them to come to Toronto, keeping players like Bichette in town on long-term extensions seems to be the right thing to do.

The Devers saga wasn’t just about positional conflict or clubhouse drama. It was a symptom of something deeper: a Red Sox organization that has lost its alignment, its patience and maybe even its identity,” Yahoo added.
