Ipswich Town: New Sam Morsy transfer exit twist revealed
Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy could leave Portman Road this summer, with a move to the Middle East being a reported option for the midfielder.
Like many of his teammates, Morsy has been on an adventure of a lifetime with the Tractor Boys. His arrival from Middlesbrough in August 2021 was a solid addition for the Tractor Boys, but not one that anyone would’ve expected to have led to a trip to the Premier League.
The Egyptian international was named captain by the boss of the time, Paul Cook, just a couple of months after arriving and quickly proved why he’d been appointed leader of the dressing room. He has been a consistent driving force in the middle of the park at Portman Road, steering his teammates towards back-to-back promotions, ending with a season in the Premier League.

Things didn’t go how Morsy and everyone else would’ve wanted in the top flight, but he said following the final game of the season – a 3-1 home defeat to West Ham United – that it was a “dream come true” to compete at the level and that he felt Ipswich have a very strong chance of going straight back up, although new reports have suggested that he may not be there to experience it.
According to TEAMtalk, the 33-year-old may leave Town this summer, and that they’d be willing to let him leave for nothing, even though Morsy still has one year left on his current deal. He agreed to these terms not long before the start of last season.
Ipswich plan to have a huge overhaul of their squad following their relegation, as per the online outlet, and the captain is one of the names on the Tractor Boys’ chopping block. TEAMtalk added that teams in the Middle East are monitoring the Egyptian’s situation.

Morsy has played such a pivotal role in Ipswich’s rise up the English footballing pyramid that it would feel weird for them to all of a sudden let him go with no financial return when he’s not out of contract.
Morsy proved in the 2023/24 campaign, when Town finished second in the Championship with 98 points, that he is still a quality operator in the second tier. His time in the top flight didn’t out him as any slouch punching way above his weight either.
Even if Ipswich’s aim is to lower the average age of their squad in certain areas, Morsy’s experience and leadership could still be a vital asset to them, whether that be as a starter or as more of a squad player.

According to TEAMtalk, the Egyptian midfielder is keen to explore opportunities in the Middle East, and the Tractor Boys would be willing to let their skipper depart for no transfer fee.
There’s no question that the 33-year-old has been a pivotal figure for Ipswich since joining from Middlesbrough in 2021 – helping guide them to back-to-back promotions to the Premier League in his second and third seasons.
However, following both relegation and this report, the club could be ready to undergo somewhat of a squad overhaul – with Morsy potentially allowed to leave – as part of a fresh start under manager Kieran Mckenna.
Damning verdict on potential Sam Morsy, Ipswich Town departure
Speaking to FLW, our Ipswich Town Fan Pundit, Adam Wilkin, expressed his strong opposition to allowing Morsy to leave for nothing this summer.
“I think letting Morsy go on a free this season would be absolute madness,” Wilkin told FLW.
“Yes, he has struggled a bit in the Premier League, and we should be looking to build for the future – but with him leaving, Luongo already released, you’d be lacking so much experience and leadership within the squad and that midfield – which i think is very important.
“The implemental side of the game is incredibly important, there’s not that many other leaders. Dara O’Shea has taken the captain’s armband on a couple of occasions whilst Morsy missed games in the Premier League, but i think his influence at the club is just too big and too tough to replace immediately.
“If he was to leave at the end of his contract, that would make more sense – you could slowly faze him out throughout this season in terms of that leadership ability and embed new players.
“But for him to leave this summer – I think it would be a dreadful decision to let him go.”
Sam Morsy leaving would present both challenges and new opportunities
Morsy’s potential departure would definitely be a huge moment in the Tractor Boy’s transition back to Championship football – with the Egypt international having made over 150 appearances for the club.
He did sign a new contract in the summer of 2024 – but Town are reportedly prepared to facilitate his exit as part of their broader plans.
For Morsy personally, a move to the Middle East is a great opportunity both financially and culturally – given his heritage. The growing number of elite players making the move and tax-free wages would be another nice incentive.
However, as Wilkin’s comments do highlight, the timing and manner of such a departure could have implications for Ipswich’s immediate prospects in the second-tier.
