Jay Stansfield lands major boost as Birmingham City return delayed..

Birmingham City striker Jay Stansfield is set to enjoy a busy summer after earning England under-21 selection

Birmingham City hot-shot Jay Stansfield has been selected to represent England under-21s at this summer’s European Championships in Slovakia.

Stansfield has made the cut and will be part of Lee Carsley’s 23-man squad bidding for glory in Slovakia. England are looking to retain the title they won two years ago.

Carsley, who will be assisted by ex-Blues coach Ashley Cole, has selected a squad that includes Premier League regulars Tino Livramento, Elliot Anderson and Ethan Nwaneri.

Blues academy graduate Jobe Bellingham is named in the squad having recently helped Sunderland reach the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. Blues-linked goalkeeper James Beadle is expected to act as number one for the under-21s at the tournament.

Stansfield scored 23 goals for Blues last season across all competitions and is the only recognised centre-forward in the squad after Liam Delap opted to represent new club Chelsea in the Club World Cup.

England begin their campaign in the group stage against Czechia on Thursday, June 12 June at the Mol Arena before they battle Slovenia three days later. Their final group game against Germany takes place on Wednesday, June 18.

Stansfield’s return to pre-season with Blues will therefore be delayed. Blues are due to report back to the Elite Performance and Innovation Centre for testing on Wednesday, June 25 before Chris Davies takes over the following week.

The semi-finals of the tournament are due to take place on June 25 and the final is set for Sunday, June 28.
